How to count points in Flip 7

Last updated October 26, 2026

The quick answer

In Flip 7, you add up the number cards in front of you. If you have the x2 card, you double that sum. Then you add any bonus cards, from +2 to +10. If you have seven different number cards, you get 15 more points. If you draw the same number twice, you bust and score 0 for the round. The first round where someone reaches 200 points is the last one, and the highest total wins.

The short version

  • Number cards from 0 to 12 score their face value. The 0 scores nothing but counts as a number.
  • The x2 card doubles your number cards only. It does not double bonus cards or the Flip 7 bonus.
  • Seven different number cards is a Flip 7. It ends the round for everyone and adds 15 points.
  • Two cards with the same number is a bust. You score 0 for that round.
  • The game ends after the round where someone reaches 200 points. The highest total wins.

Modifier and action cards never count toward the seven number cards you need for a Flip 7.

Hit, stay or bust

On your turn you can hit and take another card, or stay and keep the points you have. If a number card matches one already in your line, you bust. Your cards for that round are worth 0, even the bonus cards. A round ends when every player has stayed or busted, or when one player gets a Flip 7.

The scoring order

The official rules use a fixed order. Doing it in another order is the most common mistake at the table.

  • First, add the values of your number cards.
  • Then double that sum if you have the x2 card.
  • Then add your bonus cards, from +2 to +10.
  • Last, add 15 points if you have seven different number cards.

The Flip 7 bonus

A Flip 7 means seven number cards with seven different numbers. The 0 counts, so it helps you get there. Bonus cards and action cards do not count. As soon as one player has a Flip 7, the round stops for everyone. Other players who have not busted still score their cards.

When the game ends

Write each round score down and add it to a running total. When at least one player has 200 points or more at the end of a round, the game is over. The player with the most points wins. If two players are tied at the top, you keep playing rounds until one of them is ahead.

Scoring Flip 7: With a Vengeance

Flip 7: With a Vengeance is a separate game with meaner cards. The race to 200 stays the same, but some cards now take points away.

  • Number cards go up to 13.
  • The divide by 2 card halves your number cards, rounded down.
  • Penalty cards from -2 to -10 take points away, but your round score can't go below 0.
  • The Zero makes your score 0 unless you get a Flip 7. Lucky 13 lets you keep a second 13. A third 13 is a bust.
  • The order is: add numbers, halve, subtract penalties, then add 15 for a Flip 7.

Brutal mode

Brutal mode is an option in the With a Vengeance rules. Your round score can go below 0. You can give penalty cards to any player, even one who busted. When you get a Flip 7, you choose: take 15 points, or take 15 points away from another player.

How to score a round of Flip 7

Four steps, in this order. Start each player at 0 if they busted.

  1. 1

    Check for a bust

If a player has two cards with the same number, they score 0. Skip the other steps for them.

  2. 2

    Add the number cards

Add the face values. Double the sum if the player has the x2 card.

  3. 3

    Add the bonus cards

Add +2, +4, +6, +8 or +10 for each bonus card in front of the player.

  4. 4

    Add the Flip 7 bonus

If the player has seven different number cards, add 15. Then add the round score to their total.

A worked example

Maya gets a Flip 7 and the round ends. Here is what each line is worth.

PlayerCardsRound score
Maya0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 (Flip 7)21 + 15 = 36
Leo12, 9, 5, x2, +426 x 2 + 4 = 56
Sam11, 8, 11 (bust)0

Maya ended the round with a Flip 7, but Leo still scores more. His x2 card doubles 26 to 52, and the +4 brings him to 56. Sam drew a second 11, so he scores nothing.

House rules vary. Where a value genuinely differs from table to table, this page says so rather than picking one and pretending it is universal.

Frequently asked questions

Does the x2 card double the Flip 7 bonus?

No. The x2 card only doubles the sum of your number cards. You add the bonus cards and the 15-point Flip 7 bonus after doubling.

Does the 0 card count toward a Flip 7?

Yes. The 0 is a number card worth no points, but it counts as one of your seven different numbers.

What do you score when you bust in Flip 7?

You score 0 for that round. Your bonus cards and your x2 card are lost too.

How many points do you need to win Flip 7?

The game ends after the round where at least one player reaches 200 points. The player with the most points wins. If the top scores are tied, play another round.

Do bonus cards count toward the seven cards?

No. Only number cards count. Bonus cards, the x2 card and action cards never help you reach a Flip 7.

What is the highest score in one round of classic Flip 7?

171 points. That is 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7 and 6, doubled with x2, plus all five bonus cards and the 15-point Flip 7 bonus.
